## What it is, and what it is not

Chiostro is a tool for **legal research** and **citation checking**: you write the question with the facts of the case, and the answer comes with numbered references that open the official text of the statute, ruling or administrative guidance.

- It is not a general-purpose assistant: it does not search the web. It builds the answer on the documents in its own database and on those the firm uploads, and it shows the passages it used.
- It is not an automatic contract generator: its job is research. It reads the documents a firm uploads and answers questions about them; what it writes supports the lawyer's drafting and is to be reviewed and signed by the lawyer.
- It is not a legal advice service: it provides legal information and is designed mainly as a working tool for professionals, firms and businesses (it can also be used for personal purposes, with the consumer protections set out in the Terms). Answers can contain errors and must be checked against the sources; the final judgment remains with whoever uses them.
- It is not an editorial database of legal scholarship: it contains official sources and states what it does not contain. The only commentary included is FiscoOggi, the Revenue Agency's own journal, labelled as such on the Coverage page.

## What it does

- **Research**: a direct answer, usually within one to two minutes, with legislation, case law and guidance together.
- **Deep research**: for questions that need more work; usually 3 to 5 minutes, up to 8 for complex cases.
- **Citation checking**: quotations are checked one by one against the source text.
- **Firm documents**: upload a contract or a pleading and ask questions about it.
- **Export to Word**, and research sessions you can pick up where you left off.

## How it works

1. It searches the legislation in force, the case law and the administrative guidance held in its database of official sources.
2. It writes the answer with numbered references: each one opens the official text.
3. It checks that every quotation is found in the source text before delivering the answer.
4. When a question needs a family of sources the database does not cover (for example the civil and criminal case law of the Court of Cassation), it says so in the answer instead of answering anyway with what it has.

The answer is written by an AI model and can contain errors or omissions: that is why every answer comes with its sources linked, ready to be checked. It is not legal advice.

## Sources

The database holds more than 670,000 documents across legislation, guidance and case law (for legislation each article counts as one document; rulings and guidance documents are counted one by one). The families:

- Legislation: Italian codes and national statutes in force (from Normattiva) and European Union law (from EUR-Lex).
- Italian Constitutional Court: judgments and orders.
- Court of Justice of the European Union: judgments, and the preliminary references made by Italian courts.
- European Court of Human Rights: the rulings published in Italian (a subset of the Court's archive).
- Tax case law: Italian Court of Cassation in tax matters (about 33,300 full-text rulings since 1980) and the tax courts.
- Administrative guidance from ministries, authorities and public bodies, including the Revenue Agency (Agenzia delle Entrate), CONSOB, COVIP, ANAC, ARERA and ART.
- EUIPO: decisions of the Boards of Appeal.
- Regional laws of Lombardy, Lazio, Emilia-Romagna, Piedmont, Liguria and Tuscany.
- FiscoOggi, the Revenue Agency's own journal: commentary, not guidance, and labelled as such.

Exact figures, counted on the database when the page is opened, with the periods covered, are on the Coverage page (in Italian): https://chiostro.legal/copertura

## Stated limits

- Italian Court of Cassation, civil and criminal: no systematic collection (a few hundred judgments and orders from third-party collections, not to be read as coverage of the Court's case law).
- Courts of first instance and courts of appeal: no systematic collection (a few dozen rulings from third-party collections).
- Administrative courts (Council of State, regional administrative courts): index only (reference, subject and outcome), not the text of the decisions.
- Lower tax courts: 4,900 rulings, mostly from the second instance. Italian Court of Auditors (Corte dei conti): not included.
- Legal scholarship: only an open-access selection, i.e. a few thousand articles from about twenty scholarly journals under Creative Commons licences; commercial journals and databases are not included. An article enters an answer only if relevant, at most two per question, and is presented as the author's opinion, never as a source of law.

When a question needs one of these, Chiostro says so in the answer.

## Confidentiality and data

- A firm's files are stored on infrastructure in the European Union, separated by firm.
- Questions and documents are not used to train models.
- To write an answer, the text of the question and the necessary passages of the sources and of uploaded documents are sent to the providers of the AI models (including in the United States), under the safeguards set out in the privacy notice.
- For personal data of third parties contained in documents and questions, the firm remains the controller and Chiostro's operator acts as processor (Article 28 GDPR): the agreement is in the Terms.
- Accounts and content are kept for the duration of the contract; after it ends they remain exportable for 30 days and are then deleted from active systems.
- Technical logs hold timings and counts, not the text of questions or documents.
- The operator's staff access professional content only at the user's request for support, or where the law requires it.
- Controller, providers, transfers and retention periods are described in the privacy notice (in Italian): https://chiostro.legal/privacy
- Provider by provider, what each receives and with which limits, on the Security and data page: https://chiostro.legal/en/security

## Pricing and terms

Chiostro is paid in tokens, that is, by the amount of text processed. 1 credit = 100,000 tokens; a deep answer uses 3-4 credits on average (300,000-400,000 tokens), a direct one usually less: usage varies with the question, the documents and the sources to read. Every plan includes all features: research and deep research, citation checking, firm documents, export to Word.

Monthly plans. For private individuals the price is VAT included; for businesses and firms (Business version) the price is VAT excluded, that is, + VAT.

- **Base**: €19.90 per month, 3 million tokens a month.
- **Pro**: €149.90 per month, 100 million tokens a month.
- **Enterprise**: €499.90 per month, 500 million tokens a month, for businesses and firms only: shared credits, up to 25 colleagues, with no limit on how many are signed in at the same time, up to 5 answers in progress at once.

With Base and Pro in the Business version, up to 2 people from the firm can be signed in at the same time; each extra seat costs €49 + VAT a month (Business only). Plans have no minimum term: each plan is charged monthly in advance and renews automatically every month until cancelled. You can cancel at any time from the Subscription page (or with an email to ciao@chiostro.legal): the plan stays active until the end of the month already paid and then stops. Plan tokens are valid for the month and do not roll over.

Top-ups, only with an active plan: €20 → 5 million tokens; €70 → 18 million tokens; €140 → 38 million tokens; €300 → 85 million tokens. Top-ups do not expire.

If you use Chiostro for personal purposes you have 14 days to withdraw, with the «Recedere dal contratto qui» (withdraw from the contract here) function on the Subscription page.

The free trial includes 1,000,000 tokens with all features and lasts at most 3 months; it needs no credit card and does not turn into a subscription by itself. One trial per person. Fill in the form at https://chiostro.legal/en#prova and you receive access by email. The full terms and conditions (version 3.0 · 20 October 2026) are in Italian, and the Italian version prevails: https://chiostro.legal/termini

## Frequently asked questions

### Can Chiostro get things wrong?

Yes, like any tool. That is why every answer carries its linked sources and quotations are compared word for word with the text of the source, and every [n] reference points to a source Chiostro actually retrieved, with the link to the official source. The final judgment remains yours.

### Which sources does it answer from?

From official databases: Normattiva, the Constitutional Court, EUR-Lex, selected rulings of the Court of Cassation and the guidance issued by the authorities. The Coverage page says exactly what is included and what is not.

### What happens to my clients' data?

Documents are stored in the European Union; to write the answer, the passages needed go to the providers of the artificial intelligence models (including in the United States) under contractual safeguards, never to train them. The privacy notice describes the controller, providers and transfers.

### How does the free trial work?

Fill in the form and you receive an email with access. The trial includes 1,000,000 tokens with every feature, no credit card, and lasts at most 3 months; it does not turn into a subscription by itself. A deep answer uses 300,000-400,000 tokens on average, a direct one usually less. Then you can choose a plan.

### How do I cancel?

From the Subscription page, whenever you like, or with an email to ciao@chiostro.legal: the plan stays active until the end of the month already paid and then stops. If you use Chiostro for personal purposes you also have 14 days to withdraw, with the «Recedere dal contratto qui» (withdraw from the contract here) function on the same page.

### How is Chiostro different from a general-purpose assistant?

Chiostro does not search the web: it builds the answer on the documents in its own database of official sources, shows the passages it used and checks that every quotation is found in the source text. The answer is still written by an AI model and can contain errors: that is why the sources are linked.

### Does Chiostro contain all Italian case law?

No. It contains the rulings of the Constitutional Court, the judgments of the Court of Justice of the European Union, the rulings of the European Court of Human Rights published in Italian, the Court of Cassation in tax matters and the guidance issued by the authorities. The civil and criminal case law of the Court of Cassation and the rulings of the lower courts are not covered systematically, and for the administrative courts there is only an index. The figures are on the Coverage page.
